CASH ROSE AUDITION MONOLOGUES

#1. "Look, I don’t know who you think I am, but I can guarantee, I am not that person.  I’ve been a teamster and busted forty footers with the best freight-loaders out there.  I’ve worked as a prison guard and taken down fellas that make you look like Pee-Wee Herman, son. Hauled junk, picked fruit and was even a deputy sheriff in a small town for a little while.  My ass has been washed by all waters, babycakes. I’m smart and I fight dirty. Now, I can either take your order or throw you out of here.  Either one don’t make me no never mind. So, what’s it gonna be, sweetheart?  Hot cakes and coffee in Cash’s Diner...that’s our specialty. And I recommend it. Or an ass-whoopin’ by someone you under-estimated."

#2. “Wake up, honey, it’s closing time.  Time to go home.  Go to bed.  It’ll be better tomorrow,  I promise. Well, I hope.  That’s the good thing about the sun comin’ up.  If you look at it the right way. Not just think about it--but sit there and look at it. It’s been happening for a long, long time.  For a lot of people.  Ya know. And I bet for even the ones comin’ out of caves, it musta felt like something fresh.  New.  Like something--like a promise. That we do get another shot at it again. Ahh, what the hell am I talkin‘ about.  I just want you to feel better. I want my friend back.  Like before.  You were like the sun walkin through that door.  I want that back. I know you want that back. Let’s get out of here. Go somewhere.  And watch the sun come up, together. What do you say... huh?”

HENRIETTA  AUDITION MATERIAL

“ No, it’s not that I didn’t understand your sermon.  I understood it perfectly.  I’m not stupid.  I was giggling because... well---I had a few tokes before I came in here.  My father would have liked your sermon about God being like the warmth from the sun on your face with your eyes closed.  You can feel the warm, but you can’t see the sun because your eyes are closed.  But you know the sun is there--because of the warmth.  He would have closed his eyes while you were talking.  But how do you know if your eyes are closed it’s not somebody holding a torch or something else and not the sun.  You see what I mean?  I believe in the warmth because I can feel it.  But I can’t say I know where it comes from. Especially if my eyes are closed.  I’ve actually seen what I thought was the Dance of Shiva with everything connected. Everything shimmering.  It was at the ocean, where Dad and I used to walk and collect ocean-smoothed colored glass. It was the most at peace I’ve ever felt. Look,  I appreciate you having my dad’s body in your church.  He was a believer.  But I’m not. So please, quit trying to convert me.  I felt his face just now.  It’s cold.  He’s not in there.  And I have no idea where he went or if I will ever have any sense of him, again. And if I feel different someday, I’ll come back and see you.  But not right now?  Right now all I can think about, all I feel, is how much I miss my father.  And how much it hurts that I don’t know where he is or if I will ever see him, again.  You can’t help me with that.  So, please, quit trying”

EVELYN AUDITION MATERIAL

Hippie woman(HENRIETTA) in hippie home prepares her child(HALO) with lunch and water and a backpack to go out into the street.  EVELYN looks on, concerned and disapproving.

EVELYN                                                                                     "Henrietta, normally, I don’t say anything.  I love you for who you are, honey.  I’ve seen you do some crazy stuff over the years.  But this.  I cannot stand here and let you send that child out in the middle of the night.  Do you hear me talking to you?

                                                 (to the child--HALO)

Halo, darling, could you go in your bedroom for a minute, I need to talk in private with your mother, sweetie.   Go on."

Halo leaves.

                                                               EVELYN

"Okay, you don’t have to speak, but you are going to listen.  The only way that child is leaving this house tonight is over my dead body. I expect her father to come up with an idea like this because he is a complete idiot.  But you, even with all that junk you smoke and all the crazy ideas you come up with, I still figured you had a little good sense.  But this experiment of letting a child walk down the street in the middle of the night to his apartment because, what?  You feel the Spirits will protect her?!  Uh uh, it is not going to happen.  Now, you go in there and take that backpack off of her.  And put her to bed like a good mother.  Because she is not going out of here, tonight, Henrietta. Or any other night.  And tomorrow, we’re going to look into getting you some help. And I intend to camp right here with my laptop in your living room and do my business. Until I am rock-solid certain that my God-Daughter’s safety is guaranteed.  So get used to having a house-guest, ‘cause i just moved in."

MADDIE AUDITION MATERIAL

#1.  "Willard, this has been one of the hardest weeks of my life. You were gone for five days. We’ve never been apart that long without talking to each other. And you lied to me about going fishing? You’re not a liar, honey.  Where were you?  And what were you doing?  Just tell me the truth.  Whatever it is.  This is not you.  This is not us.  Is it another woman? And please, don’t tell me it’s another man. That I could not handle. But that’s ridiculous. That’s not you, either. But if you don’t tell me something...  Are you sick? Are you sick, baby?  Do you have cancer or something.  Why are you acting like this?  What’s going on?  This is me. I’m your best friend.  You realize this is totally out of character.  You haven’t said a word in two days. And it is driving me crazy. And if you don’t say something in the next ten seconds, I am going to hit you with something.  Hard. Talk to me, dammit.  What is the problem, Willard.”

#2.  “Wake up, honey, it’s time to go to bed.  It’ll be better tomorrow,  I promise. Well, I hope.  That’s the good thing about the sun comin’ up.  If you look at it the right way. That we do get another shot at it again. Ahh, what the hell am I talkin‘ about.  I just want you to be like you were. To be Willard. My husband. I want my friend back.  Like before.  You were like the sun walkin through that door.  I want that back. I know you want it back, too--even if you don’t say so. Let’s get out of here. Go somewhere.  And watch the sun come up, together. Let’s do that.”

WILLARD AUDITION MATERIAL

“What do you want, baby?  The moon?  I’ll give you the moon.  I’ll just reach right up there and grab that sucker and bring it down here for you. You want it, you got it.  I will do whatever I can to see that smile, the smile I am lookin at right now, I want to see it as MUCH as I can...every day of my life.  You know why?  Because every expectation I ever had about finding the perfect woman was met and surpassed the day I met you.   And if you tell anybody I am up in here confessin’ my limitless, boundless, eternal love for you like some half-drunk, love-sick punk....I will--admit it.  Proudly. Sweetheart, we have been together five years,  three months,  six days, 14 hours--28 minutes and........12 seconds!  That was from the very moment you said “I do”--to about 5 seconds ago.   I am not going anywhere, okay?  I know your father left your mother with a bunch of kids--and it was hard on all of you.  But I am not him.  I am not going anywhere.  Now, we’ve avoided the subject.  I’ve avoided it because I know you really don’t want to talk about it.  But we have to.  It is the one thing missing in this perfect, perfect marriage.  It would make what is perfect, like Heaven.  And you already know what I am talking about.  We don’t have to start on it tomorrow. But I really want a child, Maddie.  I really, really want children.  With you.  As perfect as this is, it is missing that one thing.  That one element that will complete what we have in a way that nothing else can.  Please, don’t be afraid.  To at least talk about it.  Think about it.  Uh oh, there goes the smile.  Well, that just means I have to figure out a way to get the smile and the subject in the same room at the same time.  Tell you what, you relax--and think pleasant thoughts.  I’ma go fix us some dinner...and drink a little more wine.”
